Application Advice Asking for Recommendations COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Application Advice Asking for Recommendations COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Youre filling out your application and then DREAD fills you.RECOMMENDATIONS. You have to ask other people to tell SIPA why they think you should be accepted into SIPA. Now.. you know youre awesome but now someone else has to talk about how and why youre awesome. UGHHHHHH. We here at SIPA have you covered. Simple actions can make this process go smoother. The first thing you are going to need is TIME. PLEASE START EARLY. The minute you start thinking about applying, think about recommendations. More time will help everyone involved. More time will mean less anxiety. More time also allows for your recommender to write a great letter for you. This is definitely advice I should have taken because I became waaaaay too stressed about asking my managers/former professors for recommendations. It took me three weeks to work up the courage to tell them Im looking at grad school and need them to recommend me. Luckily they were very cool and still did wrote me recommendations, but moral of the story is dont be like me and wait! Second, DEFINITELY ask academic/professional contacts that know you the best, or at least ones you have some connection with. They should know you on a personal level and be able to speak about who you are as a person and how SIPA will assist you in getting to the next step in your career. If you dont have a strong connection with any academic/professional contacts, you can ask professors of classes you performed well in, though having them write a recommendation may require more work. To assist them, it would be beneficial to write a mini-personal statement (similar to what youd write for the application) on why you want to go to SIPA and how SIPA fits into your plans.  A mini-personal statement is useful to have regardless if you know the person well or not. It will show them why you want to attend SIPA, as well as help you write the statement for your application.  This mini-personal statement will help guide them in their recommendation of you and help them focus their writing. T he mini give the person reading the recommendation a sense of who you are. Third, if they seem to be taking too long, just kindly remind them that you need it before the deadline. Lastly, remember to say Thank you!

Climate Change Caused by Human Free Essays

Examine the role of one human activity in causing climate change With the rapid development of contemporary society, the balance between human and the nature has been destroyed. The increase of globally averaged temperature on the earth’s surface has occurred over the past century. Thus, climate problems have been the initial international issue to be handled. We will write a custom essay sample on Climate Change Caused by Human or any similar topic only for you Order Now Industrial production is one of human activities causing climate change. Firstly, this essay will analyze how carbon dioxide and small carbon particles lead to climate change. Secondly, this essay will present the cooling effect of Feron on global temperature. Finally, this essay will discuss how deforestation in expanding industrial land changes climate. The combustion of fossil fuels is inevitable in industrial production, because it provides extreme high temperature and continuous heat. It is the direct contributor to climate changes by emitting large amounts of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. The concentration of carbon dioxide has increased since industrial revolution. In the past ten years, the situation has deteriorated, as the increase in the concentration has become far quicker than previous predictions (Adam, 2007). The majority of carbon dioxide emission results from fossil fuels. Due to the increasing atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, more sun energy is absorbed and trapped in the atmosphere, enhancing greenhouse effect (NDPI, 2008). Not only greenhouse gases but also carbon particles, consisting of heavy smoke which is produced by burning fossil fuels, are responsible for climate change. These particles gather in clouds, increasing the density of the atmosphere, which causes sun heat radiation be absorbed and trapped inside the earth without being released. With less heat reflecting back to the space, negative impacts on earth’s warming are amplifyed. Consequently, burning fossil fuels in industrial production is a major cause of climate change. Freon, used as refrigerant in some industrial equipment, is another greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. This gas will corrode ozone layer, which helps to prevent ultraviolet rays from reaching the Earth, by several chemical actions; whereas the gas itself plays the role of catalyst, which means it will not reduce when decomposing ozone. If the earth is exposed to excessive ultraviolet rays, humans will suffer from skin diseases and the ecological environment will be under a dangerous condition. The news said that both Antarctic and Arctic sky had holes and the holes were expanding. It is a warning that requires effective measurements to reduce the release of Freon. Contrary to general perspective, the depletion of ozone has a net effect on cooling the Earth’s surface instead of warming it (Hamgurg, 1997). However, this greenhouse gas is still responsible for climate change. In order to enlarge factories, people require more flat land, leading to deforestation, which is another cause of climate change in industrial production. Thousands of forests are being cut down every year, posing a serious problem that destroying the balance between carbon and oxygen to the nature. If the area of forests continue to reduce, extra carbon dioxide cannot be absorbed and not enough oxygen can be produced, which means that the nature will lose the capability of adjusting the composition of atmosphere. Without the proper percent of oxygen in the atmosphere, various plants will be unable to survive, resulting in the increasingly severe destruction of the carbon and oxygen balance. Eventually, this negative cycle in the nature enhances climate change. In conclusion, industrial development plays a vital role in climate change. The emission of Feron erodes ozone layers, which cools the temperature; the combustion of fossil fuels in order to gain extreme high temperature and provide continuous heat, as well as deforestation which creates more space for factories, increase the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is a significant cause of the warmer climate. Here I Am Taking My Own Picture free essay sample

â€Å"Here I’ am Taking My Own Picture†- Analytical Its hard to imagine a time where photographs actually took time to produce. First of course to take the photograph, and then into the dark room where the film was transferred onto special paper to be put through developing chemicals. In the end you would hope for the best and that you looked good in the photo. It wasnt all that long ago that this process existed. However, now we live in a technological world where anything is possible. You no longer need to wait and pray that you didnt look fat in a picture but now its just a click of a button to view and another click of the delete button if you dont like what you see. Then your off to continue your photo shoot and free to fill p your SD card or phone memory with more of yourself. We will write a custom essay sample on Here I Am Taking My Own Picture or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In 2006, an article in the New York Times was written called â€Å"Here I Am Taking My Own Picture†. The author, Alex Williams, had written the article and explained the many possible reasons why you cant find a MySpace page without finding at least one of what the author calls a â€Å"self portrait†. These portraits are referred to in the article as â€Å"a new genre of photography†. Self portraits are almost always shot by ones own self at arms length. The author explains that some of the reasons why the self portrait is so popular may be because of technology, or behavioral growing process where adolescents try to discover themselves. It may also be because they want attention or believe that like their favorite celebrity, their peers cant get enough of them. Personally I blame technology for being the biggest reason why children, friends, and family have become much more narcissistic over the past decade. Think back to when you were a teen or even reflect upon yourself now. We all get a little thrill out of photographing ourselves. I can personally admit that as I have many of these â€Å"self portraits† up on Facebook. I dont think that fifty years ago before camera phones and digital photography that our parents and grandparents didnt like getting attention or striving for it. Being able to take pictures of yourself in privacy allows you to do it without inhibitions. Each person takes better pictures of themselves than anyone else can because they know their own bodies, they know their own minds. (Adams). They most likely were doing the same thing at our age. They were probably trying to discover themselves through creativity or whatever they had available. Maybe they wrote poetry or songs. Perhaps they liked to draw or got a funky haircut. My point is that everybody goes through a period of self discovery, however today we now have an easy way to express ones self with photography. Since 2006, we can safely say that although we loved MySpace, most have moved onto Facebook. This network allows you to upload your camera photos directly to Facebook. Kodak even recently came out with the Kodak Easyshare camera. This camera also allows you to directly upload your photos to Facebook.
